Daily Reading Question In what ways can you be a witness of the Book of Mormon, even without seeing the plates? How can your witness of the Book of Mormon influence other people?
There are soo many great spiritual lessons in this reading assignment! I love the B of M!! The first lesson that caught my attention tonight was found in verse 7..."And it came to pass that when they were buried in the deep there was no water that could hurt them, THEIR VESSELS BEING TIGHT LIKE UNTO A DISH." The Jaradite people spent time preparing their vessels with light and food, and ensured their barges would be secure so as to not let any water inside. If we follow their pattern we will seek out light, The Savior's light, and let it shine in our life, become self-sufficient, and then make sure our spiritual armor has no chinks in it to protect us from the adversary. (Good questions might be "where are the cracks/ chinks in my barge/armor and how can I overcome to make me less vulnerable to Satan?) Following this pattern we, too, will be "tight like unto a dish" and regardless of the waves of affliction, temptation, or trial we will be protected and unaffected and be brought back up from them by the power of God. The second lesson is found in verse 5. We are told that the Lord caused a furious wind to blow upon the waters. This wind ultimately lead them to their promised land. I can't imagine this journey was easy. They spent an entire year enclosed in a mostly dark barge with animals, cramped quarters, and with what I think would be scary circumstances..."they were tossed upon the waves of the sea...many times buried in the depths of the sea...mountain waves broke upon them...great and terrible tempests which were caused by the wind." (Verses 5-7) I believe our trials/challenges/afflictions are like these furious waves...they are the spiritual traction, often given by God, propelling us toward our promise land in eternity. Without these experiences we cannot become who Heavenly Father wants us to become and get to where He wants us to be.
I have read the assigned reading. Thank you Melissa for putting this together!
I'm grateful to learn that although the Three WItnesses to the Book of Mormon struggled to stay close to the Gospel, they never denied their testimony of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. What a powerful book! I also liked how the verses state that 'the work' (The Book of Mormon itself) is a testimony of its own truthfulness. As we read and study and ponder, we too can see how the Book testifies of itself as we feel the Spirit while reading. -David
My hope is that each of us will do more than merely acknowledge that the book is true; that we may act on the testimony we gain and cling to it always through gospel action. -David
