The Sons of Helaman stood fast, even when they could have taken a different attitude because they had received many wounds. There didn't seem to be any one of them complaining about their placement in the array of battle. I imagine the caliber of these young men was such that they counted it an honor to be placed near the front of the line, and their reliance upon the commands of their leader kept them alive. To stand fast is to face life's most difficult challenges, and learn from the wounds, let them make us better and more experienced for the next battle.
If we are to keep ourselves/families/communities "...from falling...insomuch that not even one soul not be slain," (vs 39) and to have "....success in obtaining "people" (substituted people for "lands") which were lost" (vs.1) we need to follow Helamen and his army for guidance. Verse 40 is the prescription for not having casualties in the battles of mortality against the adversary...we need to be steadfast, STRICT to remember God, observe to keep the commandments CONTINUALLY, and keep our faith strong in our prophet and his counsel for our today's and our tomorrow's. This doesn't mean we won't have battle wounds (vs.40) but like Helamen, we can be victorious.
