The Nephites, in late chapter 3 and early chapter 4, focused on being physically prepared for battle....they gathered food, weapons, built fortifications and srategically placed themselves in center of the city, and unified themselves into one body of people. In chapter 4:16 the robbers surrounded then Nephites on all sides (normally a good strategic position for winning a battle, I am sure) but because of the preparations of the Nephites they were able to out-survive the robbers. We can liken these scriptures to us by following their example of physically and spiritually preparing ourselves. Physically; follow the council of prophets to be self sufficient with food, water, and money in case of emergency, loss of job, calamity, etc. Spiritually: center our lives on the Savior through daily study of scriptures, prayers, being humble, repenting, temple and weekly church attendance, partaking of the sacrament, and seeking to be unified with our families, ward members and community...along with many other ways. It won't matter if we are surrounded on all sides by wickedness we will be preserved and delivered.
