Thanks for all the talks. I love how Elder Scott helped be to better understand when I am making decisions based on desired outcome is disregarding the commandments. Something I think we can all be more careful about. Obedience frees our hearts from the things of this world and allows us to make decisions based on wisdom and not emotion. I.e. chastity allows is to chose a husband who will be the best fit for.is and not bind us.to someone we logically know is no good for us.
I loved verse 14 and it made me think of what I need to do in my own life to arm myself and my family with righteousness. If I had to send my kids out to battle I would want to make sure they had everything they could possibly need to protect them. In a sense everyday when they leave to school they are going to a different battle and they need just as much protection. I need to make sure they are spiritually prepared to face whatever temptations they will encounter. I also need to do the same things. I need to make sure I am doing those things that bring me closer to Christ in instead of further away.
When I think of being armed with righteousness and the power of God I automatically think of the small and simple things. There is so much wickedness in our world today, but their is also so much good in our world today also! As I pray every morning and read my scriptures I am armed with righteousness and the power of God. I have the power to overcome temptation when I arm myself every morning with these small and simple yet powerful tools from my loving Heavenly Father. I love how everyday we are reminded of these small and simple truths as we read the Book of Mormon together!
Being armed with righteousness and with the power of God means to me to put on the whole armour of God..."that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." (Eph 6:11) I know that when we diligently do those things the Lord has asked of us that He will bless us with greater power to resist the temptations of the adversary. I want to make sure I am not missing any armour as I am faced each day with challenges. Satan wants us to feel weak and strip us from our armour. But with prayer, scripture study, temple attendance, going to church, service, FHE etc., these things will help us have His constant companionship to guide and strengthen us and protect us. How grateful I am for the tools He has given and for the knowledge that He will not leave us to fight our own battles!
I liked vs 14 as well. I love the principle that we are given power from God. I think this power can come to us in many ways-the Holy Ghost, the temple, the scriptures, greater faith, or the grace of Jesus Christ through his atonement. We are given strength beyond our own and have to rely on our Father in Heaven and Savior. There is power in the knowledge that we are never ever alone.
We are all faced with spiritual battles each day and arming ourselves with our testimony is what will keep us strong and close to God. I am working on my testimony now. I think many battles come from not knowing or lacking faith, therefore we need the power of God by arming ourselves with righteousness.
Melissa i really really loved that second talk and really needed to read that today. I think for me arming myself is going to be watching my thoughts and not falling for Satan's lies. I love everything she said about focusing on Gods truth and becoming enlightened by that. Thank you for posting that talk!!
I love how before we learn about the wars, etc., the angel asks Nephi if he remembers the covenants the Lord has made with the house of Israel. For me that is what will arm me with power and righteousness - remembering/keeping the covenants I have made. And it will also be what gives me hope when I seem outnumbered by foes.
