Signs are visual proof of something, in this case with Nephi the Lord gave to the people logical proof. This type of knowledge seems to be based on reason and can be forgotten, even unreasoned and explained away and dismissed. Seeking for signs is a gamble on truth, anything can be taken as a sign or dismissed as a coincidence.
Spiritual knowledge is based on faith, then confirmation, then gets tested over and over again through life. Continually growing stronger as its nurtured, or weaker as its neglected. But those spiritual impressions we get sometimes from the Spirit that testify of truth are milestones in learning that we will be held accountable for dismissing.
