V33 really hit me today. It promises, "if ye will turn to the Lord with full purpose of heart, and put your trust in him, and serve him with all diligence of mind" then they will be be delivered. Notice the word 'MIND'. It doesn't say serve Him with all diligence of strength, or work, or action. The focus is on our mind, our thoughts, our desires.
It is a reminder for us to control our thoughts and our desires because as Elder Oaks said, "Desires dictate our priorities, priorities shape our choices, and choices determine our actions." Neal A. Maxwell seconds this when he said, "What we insistently desire, over time, is what we will eventually become and what we will receive in eternity."
I love this reminder to us, that if we can control our thoughts (not dwell on bad thoughts even for a second), they will not lead to actions. Or better yet, if we feed our good thoughts (and dwell on them) they will lead to good actions, and help us develop good character.
Great insight. Makes me think of the scripture let virtue garnish thy thoughts, then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of the lord. We will engage in better actions and have confidence before the lord when we control our thoughts.
I am noticing the “if ye will” in the scriptures and looking for the “he will”, or the Lord's promise that follows. It doesn’t say “he might” or “he can” ...it says "he will"...so in verse 33. If ye will: 1)Turn to the Lord with full purpose of heart. 2)put your trust in Him 3) Serve Him. He WILL: according to His own will and pleasure, deliver you out of bondage. And that’s a promise--and the Lord's promises are sure!
I was thinking of a person I am close to who has transgressed the laws of God as I read verses 28-33. This person truly has a "stumbling block" placed in her way and feels like she can not get out from under the consequences of her sins and progress. I also love verse 33! The Lord cannot succor us while we transgress, "BUT" if we will turn toward the Savior (we have to turn away from the world and sin) and with full purpose of heart (not halfheartedly), and serve Him (I love this reminder...it is the very essence of turning outward instead of remaining inward that helps us become like Christ) he will with pleasure (happiness!) deliver us, save us, and re-establish peace again in our lives.
