2 Nephi 5:27; What do you think it means to live “after the manner of happiness”?

Good Talk

  1. I loved this quote from the talk today, "There will be a tendency, in the complexity of these times, to forget that Nephi gloried “in plainness” and that the principles of happiness he modeled are both plain and simple (2 Nephi 33:6). If we overlook that fact, we may be like the children of Israel at the time of Moses who, when bitten by poisonous serpents, failed to look at the brass serpent Moses held up and thus live. Of these, Nephi says: “And the labor which they had to perform was to look; and because of the simpleness of the way, or the easiness of it, there were many who perished” (1 Nephi 17:41). The way to happiness can be just as simple and just as easily missed."

  3. I can see the link between his standard. And living after the manner of happiness. It seems like the world standard is do what you want and you will be happy. Your free to choose your happiness. It's true but it's so shady. We are free to choose but the consequences of the choices we make are always attached. And lots of those consequences do not lead to happiness. We do need to set his standard in our homes so our children can recognize true happiness. Using agency for good. Brings good. Using agency for good in hard times helps us get through. His peace showers down on us as with his love and tender mercies. Using agency for what we think looks like fun in the moment can bind us in chains. Being addicted or stuck in a emotional prison is not free. The standards of the church will bring us happiness and the fact that we get to choose to live them will bring us true joy when we know we had the strength and courage to come unto Christ. And have his help. Gets me excited to think my home could one day be a defense and a refuge to my family and friends. Nothing better than being in a home that is a safe place from the pressures of sin and wordly expectations.

    1. Thanks Katey for your comment. I always talk to my kids about consequences. They have free agency but they can't choose the consequences. Loved your comment!

  4. I noticed that he said "after the MANNER of happiness". They still had wars and contentions so they probably weren't happy all the time. But the choices they made were the what would eventually bring them happiness.

  5. The link did not take me to a specific talk. Just listed BYU speeches. Can you let me know the title of this talk and who it was given by so that I can look it up? Thank you! I love your blog and I look forward to the talks you post. They have been very helpful as I strive to study the gospel each day!
