Daily Reading Question

In 2nd Nephi 8:17 we have been admonished to “stand up." What does that mean to you?

  1. This question really hit me today and instantly took me back to a specific time in my life. I was in basic training in the military and was having a rough day. I remember getting a letter that day from my wife. Inside it she wrote down the lyrics to a song called "Stand" by Rascall Flatts. Here is a link to anyone who wants to listen to it with lyrics.

To me to stand first off means that you are "slouching" like the talk, or kneeling, or laying down, but regardless you are not living up to your full potential. This scripture and song, to me, are a beacon of hope. It means to not give up, that we aren't perfect, and we won't be in this life. The most important thing is that we never give up, no matter how hard the circumstances. If you think about it the most inspiring stories aren't the ones that are easy and end happily, but the ones that go through the roughest time to conquer at the end. Just like the Savior, who suffered everything for us and bowed His head on the cross, but eventually stood up in the Garden Tomb resurrected. If Jesus went through life a "man of sorrows", then we shouldn't expect things to always be easy, but we should hope to keep pressing forward until our own work is finished, just like our perfect Exemplar.

    1. Listened to the song and loved it! I have never heard it and it was so applicable. Loved the imagery of the Savior bowing on the cross but the hope of Him standing a resurrected being! Thanks for sharing.

  2. Loved loved this talk! In it Sheri says, "we must stand tall so that we will stand out from the rest of the world. Only in doing so may we hope to find joy. For finding joy and standing tall, not in feet or inches but as ambassadors for the Lord, are directly connected." She also said "Stand tall, thrust in your sickle and join in this work with vigor. I invite you to rededicate your life to building the kingdom. To reach out to someone who has wandered. To take a new member under your wing...To look and pray for missionary moments. To make a difference in someone’s life spiritually, especially the members of your own family. Verse 24 really stood out to me, Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O Zion... To stand up takes real courage and strength but As we do so, we will become one of the mightiest forces for good this world has ever seen.

  3. I used the footnotes to lead me to D&C 113 where the prophet Joseph teaches what it means to "awake, awake! Put on strength." He teaches us that strength refers to the power and authority of the priesthood. Anyone else wonder why Isaiah says in verse 25 "Shake thyself from the dust; arise, sit down? Why the counsel to stand up and then sit down?

  4. After reading the seminary manual this phrase I asked about earlier is a call to shake/get rid of the sin and influence of the world and break the curse of God. So basically what I learned from Isaiah is my need to spiritually awaken, repent, and come to The Lord by making covenants through priesthood power and then, with the help of the Savior, keep those covenants.
