The Essential Role of Member Missionary Work

  1. In V75 we are promised joy, and to be blessed if we do missionary work. But member missionary work is something I struggle with because I don't want to offend, or have an awkward situation. The quote below really helps me with this.

Clayton M. Christensen (a member of the area 70 and one of the church's greatest scholars who teaches at the Harvard Business School) said:

"Imagine you are the General of an army and you have these state of the art weapons. You have to decide which of your soldiers to give them to. You’ll give your best weapons to the soldiers who are operating on the front line, engaged in direct combat with the enemy. Those soldiers who are behind the front line, driving the trucks, or cooking the soups, keeping the records, they don’t need the best weapons.

As we decide to do member missionary work, it’s as if geographically we are repositioned to the front line."

One of the state of the art weapons he is referring to is an increased sensitivity and feeling of the Spirit. As we try to be a member missionaries, I know we will feel the Spirit stronger, and we will be happier.

  2. I am no scriptorian and never pretend to be lol and get a bit nervous when I try sharing my knowledge of the scriptures and I'm always afraid of saying the wrong thing and so I don't even try. But I have other strengths that the Lord has blessed me with in furthering His work. I think one of the most powerful missionary tools that we have is being an example. It’s showing other people who we are and what we believe without saying anything about it. We can show them what we believe with the way we dress, the way we talk, and the way we treat other people. And then build upon that...be a friend. They need to know they have a friend there and someone they can trust before they will come to church and once that trust is built up they will be more willing to listen to what we have to say. Let them know we care first before we share with them what we know.
