I like how David A. Bednar explained it, "Nephi teaches us, “When a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth [the message] unto the hearts of the children of men” (2 Nephi 33:1). Please notice how the power of the Spirit carries the message unto but not necessarily into the heart. A teacher can explain, demonstrate, persuade, and testify, and do so with great spiritual power and effectiveness. Ultimately, however, the content of a message and the witness of the Holy Ghost penetrate into the heart only if a receiver allows them to enter. Learning by faith opens the pathway into the heart."
ReplyDeleteI love that receiving truth is up to us. God doesn't force us to believe, but He invites us to seek and He offers us truth by the Spirit. I often have the experience that I am hearing or reading basic truths - things I have heard and known before, but they come into my heart with greater force and deeper learning. It is as if the truth isn't just engaging my mind, but my spirit. It motivates me to change. It sometimes happens unexpectedly, but more often it is when I am seeking truth or revelation. It is when I am choosing to seek out God's truth, and His Spirit can flow freely into my heart because my heart is open and soft.
ReplyDeleteElder Maxwell said, "It is up to us. God will facilitate, but He will not force. Righteous desires need to be relentless, therefore, because, said President Brigham Young, “the men and women, who desire to obtain seats in the celestial kingdom, will find that they must battle every day” (in Journal of Discourses, 11:14). Therefore, true Christian soldiers are more than weekend warriors."
We talked about the parable of the sower today in sunday school. We prepare our soil to receive the word into us. If we have rocky soil, the seed can't take place, although many sowers may bring the words unto us.
