  1. I think there is no peace because we lose our confidence in the Lord (D&C 121:45), meaning that we cannot expect help from the Lord while we are sinning. If we are being righteous then we can and should expect help.

I also love that it says in v 4 "thou are obstinate." He knows that it is hard for us to change our nature, but i truly have felt a change in who I am as I have really started to study the scriptures and pray more effectively. The problem now is exactly what L&L faced. Do we keep it up? There were plenty of times some far that they have listened and understood and obey/repented. My goal is to get rid of the "iron" inside of me and let the Lord work on me to become a better person. I was thinking about this yesterday about L&L. They had plenty of opportunities to partake of the Gospel and make it lasting. What is the difference for them and me? I realized just like the hymn says: "God will force no man to heaven." (Hymn 240) Meaning that if we are not willing to change and make the effort required he will continue to gives us chances to see what we are doing wrong, i.e. and angel chastening you, your brother through the Lord shocking you, hunger, a storm so bad that you almost die, wandering 40 years in the wilderness, or 8; but if I am not willing to change my attitude then He has nothing to work with. To me this is what i liken about the scriptures, not so much condemning L&L or the children of Israel, but learning from them. Learning that God doesn't care who you are, he just cares that you are obedient to Him and make the effort (1 Ne 17:33-35). He will take care of changing us as long as we bring forth the required fruits of repentance. Thank you for putting this together everyday to help me remember what I need to do to become a better person, and sorry for the long boring post.

    1. Loved this! Maybe the willingness to change that you spoke of is the humility that is needed to invite and allow to the Lord to give us that change of heart. An then like you mentioned comes the question in
Alma 5:26 And now behold, I say unto you, my brethren, if ye have experienced a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?
Thanks so much for sharing your insights!

    2. Thanks for that. I just realized a perfect example of all the above inside of Alma 5 that you quoted. Look at the similarities between L&L and Alma the Younger. They both have experiences that an angel comes down and tells them to stop being stupid and repent. At this point they are at a crossroad, they continue or change. Obviously we know what L&L did, but what did Alma do? He prayed, asked for forgiveness, and then went to work. A crucial point in this is that these hard things are meant to be wake up points to change, they are not change themselves. In Alma 5:46, Alma states his reasoning for believing. He doesn't mention an angel once, these occurances are not what produces faith, they are there for us to realize we have done wrong and see if we will change ourselves. Alma says that he fasted and prayed. This is what he did after the crossroads with the angel. He repented, prayed, studied, fasted. This is how we change, having an angel come down doesn't change us. L&L are proof of that. We need to desire to change an then do the necessary work.

  2. The Lord loves the sinners not the sin. When we are not being righteous we think that the Lord is out to get us, but in reality He wants us to come back to Him because He loves us. In vs 10 it is talking about the refiners fire, and how through our life we may get refined every once in awhile. The sinners may see it as God has forgotten me, but we know that through those trials we only become stronger when we stick with God. My goal in this life is to become more like my Savior and that is only possible through His Atonement and being refined by the Lord.
Reading the Book of Mormon everyday for the past month I have received the peace that the wicked can not feel. I have received strength to do hard things. This is my last semester of college and it is a stressful time, it is sometimes challenging, and some days I want to give up. Reading the Book of Mormon has given me the confidence I need to finish! It has given me hope to know that we all go through difficult times, some are more difficult than others, but through those difficult times we have a Father in Heaven who is cheering us on, who is there for us as long as we come unto Him. Thank you Melissa for giving me the opportunity to see daily reminders of who I want to become like! I love the Book of Mormon and the peace and confidence it brings to me each day!

  3. I am loving this format to help me study the book of Mormon. It is changing me as I focus more on the word of the Lord. Every day I get some kind of answer or reminder to help me, either in the scriptures or the talks.

I liked the scriptures today about water. I want peace in my life like a river not a small stream. And I wanted my righteousness to be constant like the waves. And when life is hard (desert) I know that I will be provided with the nourishment (water from rock) from Christ that I need.

I also noticed that this chapter reminded me of when Lehi was speaking to L&L in chapter 2.

  4. Peace is a state of mind...i think when we yield to our spirits, our true selves and put off the natural man than no matter what circumstance we are in we feel at peace because we are living in accordance with our true selves we are connected to God who's peace is not of the world. Wickedness will always be in opposition of peace because when we give into the natural man our spirits will resist, we may find temporary pleasure but not lasting peace or happiness.

  5. Peace is the one emotion Satan can not imitate. Peace is gifted, by the Savior, to those who are striving to keep His commandments and seeking after righteous. Thus, wickedness never was happiness. The scripture John 14:27 reminds me of where the source of peace comes from..."Peace I leave with you my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid."

  6. Verse 10 really stood out to me. This last year has been a difficult time for me and at the start of this year I decided I wanted to improve my relationship with my Savior by feasting upon His words. It's only been a month but already I've noticed the refining process in me that can only happen by inviting Christ into my life everyday. I also loved Verse 18, peace will be a river if we keep the commandments.
